The experience of stained glass has to be appreciated from inside the building. As the sun shines through the window the images of glass become blurred almost fluid like and the light is tainted with colour. This shines on you like a waterfall and you begin to experience the light rather than read the images it is portraying.
In 2007 Amanda and Kit were commissioned by Sunderland City Council to create Minsterllation – a site specific interactive light & sound installation at Sunderland Minster, as part of the city’s Shine winter festival. The aim was to bring the peaceful, sanctuary-like experience of the interior of the Minster out into the grounds where passers by could escape and ponder for a while. Using photographed panels from the Minster’s beautiful William Morris window, a blurred, flickering image of a window was projected onto the grass after dark. Moving across the path in front caused the individual panels to clarify into recognizable pictures for a few moments, accompanied by a swell of choral voices. Individual notes were specially recorded by the Minster’s choir and programmed to respond to movement in a musical yet ever changing way, overlapping to build chords which were never the same but always harmonious.
For two weeks in December 2008, Minsterllation was installed in the social space in Dance City, Newcastle and was enjoyed by many people as an indoor sanctuary and a place for reflection.
Minsterllation was one of four works commissioned by Sunderland City Council in association with Newcastle Gateshead Initiative as part of SHINE 07.
Minsterllation was funded by National Lottery, Arts Council North East, Northern Rock Foundation and Tyne and Wear Partnership.
